Cockroach Identification

Cockroaches hide in dark, secluded areas during the day. Their flat, oval-shaped bodies allow them to conceal themselves in our homes and businesses in difficult-to-reach areas. They emerge at night, crawling over our floors, counters, tables, appliances, and any food they come across. Cockroaches are unwanted, dangerous pests.

Cockroaches threaten people and property in a variety of ways. Living together in large numbers, they stain walls, floors, furniture, and other things with their feces, and they chew on personal items stored in our homes. Cockroaches also pose significant health hazards. They contaminate surfaces and food with diseases, pathogens, and parasites that make people ill, such as E. coli, salmonella, and gastroenteritis. Also, their shed skins and excrement trigger allergies and asthma attacks in those susceptible.
German cockroaches are pests that prefer to live indoors. They live inside in warm, humid areas like kitchens, inside bathrooms, and laundry rooms. American cockroaches and Australian cockroaches prefer to live outside in gardens, trees, and areas under mulch. They do occasionally invade homes, usually while foraging for food. These roaches enter structures at the ground level and like to hide in warm, damp basements, bathrooms and kitchens. Australian roaches are attracted to light, and exterior lights often draw them to a home. Unlike most roaches that prefer high humidity, brown-banded cockroaches prefer hot, dry locations. Inside our homes, brown-banded cockroaches are most likely to live in the upper cabinets in the kitchen and under furniture.
